One Of The Two Towers

Posted by P J W Miller (Chase Terrace, United Kingdom) on 23 April 2009 in Architecture and Portfolio.

Perrotts Folly, which is one of the oldest buildings in Birmingham and said to be the original inspiration for Tolkien's The Two Towers, is being brought back to life as a major tourist attraction and educational and training facility by Trident Care and Support in partnership with the Perrotts Folly trustees.

The Follys most famous fan was undoubtedly JRR Tolkien who lived in its shadow in nearby Stirling Road during his childhood.

Every day on his way to school he would have walked past both the Folly and The Waterworks tower which together are said to be the inspiration for the two towers after which the second book of the Lord of The Rings trilogy is named.

Tolkiens own sketches of Orthanc are based on the Folly’s windows, and the Waterworks tower resembles his illustrations of Minas Tirith . There is no doubt that the brooding presence of these towers played on young Tolkiens imagination.

This is a great image! I like how the HDR brings out the details in the brick work of the tower and sky, with the branches against it, brings the perfect atmosphere.

Very nicely framed, I feel as though I'm sneaking a peak from behind the branches. I really like this one but I have to say I've never read any of the books or seen the films, perhaps I'm the only one who has not!! :)

impressive capture of this tower and the HDR processing vies it this extra magical look and feel that could easily be associated with Middle Earth... excellent light and detail and great commentary too that explain the tower's significance to Tolkien and his works... a theme kind of close to my thoughts at the moment as I have recently watched the entire trilogy of movies (again) and started reading the LoTR books (again! - although for the first time in their original language - English)...
