Sarehole MillPosted by P J W Miller (Chase Terrace, United Kingdom) on 26 April 2009 in Architecture and Portfolio. Sarehole Mill was built in 1765 on the site of Biddle's Mill and is one of the two surviving watermills in Birmingham. It was first built as a corn-grinding mill but it served also for rolling sheet metal and wire rolling. This historic place was used also as the setting for author J.R.R. Tolkien’s famed book “The Hobbit” Its structure shows the transform of the industry through the centuries. There is no doubt that Tolkien used the area around Sarehole Mill as the setting for the ‘Shire’ in The Lord of the Rings. Soon after it was published, he said that ‘The Shire…is in fact more or less a Warwickshire village of about the period of the Diamond Jubilee.’ (he was referring to the 60th anniversary of the coronation of Queen Victoria in 1897) Me and my camera(s) will travel both locally and as far as is physically allowable within the constraints of this our local celestial body and provide images from a purely subjective point of view for your evaluation and commentation . Locally based near Lichfield If you have the time I would appreciate constructive comments please and in return for your honesty my comments on your work will also be constructive. A brief message to all the brothers and sisters of AM3 and other photographic blog sites. It is a great feeling to get so many warm and constructive comments from all of you all over the world , it is good to be able to communicate in a friendly manner with no hint of racism, sexism or other ism's. It is good to be able to see what lies in your part of the world and to be able to give constructive comments on your work.
